Noah (2014)

Director: Darren Aronofsky
Genre: action, adventure, drama
Length: 138 minutes
Who’s in it: Emma Watson, Douglas Booth, Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkins…
Imdb rating: 6.0

A man is chosen by his world’s creator to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world. – IMDB

Well, we all know the story of Noah’s Ark as it is told in the Bible. But the story in Noah is not quite like the original one. This one includes fantasy and sci-fi elements like magic and angels who are transformed into some kind of robot rocks. And I have to say the weapons that they use don’t seem to fit that era.

Overall I didn’t love the movie, but I didn’t hate it either. I thought the actors all did a great job portraying their character and the music fit the different scenes. Some elements in the movie were a tad over-the-top, like the angel-rock-robots. It’s great that Hollywood wants to make the story more appealing (maybe?), but that didn’t work. On the other hand, it did add some action to the movie.

On IMDB the movie got a score of 6, which is understandable. When I first saw the trailer in the cinema I got excited immediately. I was hoping it would be an amazing whirlwind of adventure, so I got a bit disappointed.

I give this movie:

PS. I love you – book & movie review

The original book PS. I love you by Cecilia Ahern was published in 2004. The story is about Holly who loses her husband, Gerry, to a brain tumour. What she soon discovers is that he left her a list of things to do after his death. Every month she has to open an envelope and read the letter signed with ps. I love you. With the help of her best friends, Denise and Sharon, and her family Holly manages to find a way to live without Gerry by her side.

I loved this book! Don’t ask me how I have never picked it up before, because I haven’t got a clue. I’ve heard friends talk about the movie about a million times, but until today I had never seen that one either. Maybe I’ve always thought I wouldn’t like it. That it was just another overhyped movie. Well, I can honestly say that the book is brilliant. Cecilia Ahern, well done! A few tears escaped my eyes when reading it and some scenes were so hilarious that I was laughing out loud.

Director: Richard LaGravenese
Genre: drama, romance
Length: 126 minutes
Who’s in it: Gerard Butler, Hilary Swank, Lisa Kudrow, Harry Connick Jr…
Imdb rating: 7,0

Well, the movie was not at all what I expected. It kind of sucks. At least it does when compared to the perfect novel. First and for most, they changed almost everything! Literally. They left out a bunch of characters and changed the entire storyline except for Gerry’s death and his letters. The only thing I liked was the soundtrack by John Powell, it was beautiful. I read somewhere that this movie as seen as one of the best romantic movies ever. So I daresay I strongly disagree. And it got a 7 on IMDB. Pf. I got bored watching it.

Final conclusion: read the book and watch the movie if you haven’t read the book. Only then you might like it.

Proof (2005)

Director: John Madden
Length: 100 minutes
Genre: drama, mystery, romance
Who’s in it: Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, Jake Gyllenhaal, Hope Davis…
Imdb rating: 6.8

The daughter of a brilliant but mentally disturbed mathematician, recently deceased, tries to come to grips with her possible inheritance: his insanity. Complicating matters are one of her father’s ex-students who wants to search through his papers and her estranged sister who shows up to help settle his affairs. – imdb

I bought the dvd of this movie a couple of months ago, even though I had never heard of it before. Today I decided to give it a go. The story was really interesting and Gwyneth Paltrow her acting skills really stood out (so far I’d only seen her on Glee). The movie deals with being insane and a genius at the same time. Which seems to be the case for a lot of famous mathematicians and scientists. In high school I was never really fond of math, but I envy people that are good at it. Languages are more my cup of tea. Anyway, Catherine (the main character) grieves her dead father, while spending a lot of time with his ex-student and her annoying sister.  Already she is having a hard time and they only make it worse, which makes her doubt herself. Is she going insane too?

I didn’t expect this movie to be any good, to be completely honest, but I liked it! The acting was great, the topic as well and I quite often had tears in my eyes.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)

Director: Dean Deblois
Length: 102 minutes
Genre: animation, adventure, action
Voices: Jay Baruchel (Hiccup), Cate Blanchett (Valka), Gerard Butler (Stoick), America Ferrera (Astrid) and many more!
Imdb rating: 8.3

In How To Train Your Dragon 2 the story of Hiccup, Toothless and all of their friends continues. The story takes places 5 years after the first one. Hiccup and Toothless have become an inseperable pair and together they explore new parts of the world and try to live the adventure. Until one day they discover a gigantic ice cave full of dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider. They find themselves only moments away from a battle that will change everything. And it may be the perfect opportunity for Hiccup to find who he really is.

You may not know this, but How to train your dragon is one of my all-time-favourite animated movies! The soundtrack is epic and the story is so interesting. I feel like it took ‘kids movies’ to a new level. And the sequel did so much more than that. Right from the start you get sucked into their world again and you experience an action-packed opening’s scene. Of course it becomes clear that the people of Berk are happily living together with dragons. Because why wouldn’t they be? A dragon seems to make a brilliant pet and keeps you entertained. The fighting has some unpredictable endings and aaah, I love this movie!

Oh yes I cried. It’s because of the soundtrack! Whenever the music is right, the movie is great for me! Especially if I get goosebumps all over.

I give this movie

no, that’s no exaggeration.

things about books |1

Yesterday I found out about the most amazing website EVER. I’m dead serious. It is and basically it’s a big database full of ebooks. No, not only classics, but also the most popular books of the moment. Definitely worth checking out! It’s heaven on earth. Unless you don’t own an ereader, then I would suggest you get one.

Also, one of the most cute books I have ever read is Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson. For those who have read the book, you know how it is filled with notes and pictures and receipts and playlists? Well, I was listening to a Spotify-playlist just now and it reminded me of the book and it made me look up a playlist of the songs mentioned in the book my Morgan Matson (this sentence is way too long, I’m sorry). I couldn’t find anything useful on Spotify, but as always Google was my best friend! It seems that Morgan Matson gets the question for a playlist very often and she has a link on her website that takes you to the website, where all of the playlists are waiting for you!

The book I’m currently reading is Stranger on a train by Jenny Diski. I like it so far. It’s about an English woman who takes takes a trip to America by boat and then decides to visit a friend. The friend offers to pick her up at the airport, but she declines and tells him she is taking the train instead. Now, I have never been to the United States, neither have I taken the train there, so I wouldn’t think that it is the same as here. Obviously, now that I’m reading the book I know it isn’t the same. Anyway, the book is about the people she meets on the train, the stories they tell and the adventures that they all experience.

Yep, I’m still listening to the playlists.

His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman

This trilogy consists of the following books: the Golden Compass (or the Northern Lights), the Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass.

When the Golden Compass movie adaptation first came out in 2007, I immediately went to see it in the cinema. I remember everyone cheering and clapping when Lorek Byrnison (the bear) won the big fight, it was fun! That the movie was based on a book, I found out later. But it wasn’t until 2 weeks ago that I finally decided it was time to read it.

In the Golden Compass/the Northern Lights you are introduced to a new fantasy world and the main character Lyra. In that world every human has a daemon, which is some sort of companion animal that is part of you. Between that particular daemon and its human there is a link. When one of them goes to far (in distance), they experience severe suffering, like their heart is being ripped out. Well, in Lyra’s world something is going awry. Children are missing and soon everyone is scared of the Gobblers. What happens next is a whirlwind of adventures, interesting characters and great imagination of the author.

In the Subtle Knife, another main character is introduced. His name is Will and he is from another world, which resembles ours. In that world, people don’t have daemons. One day Will needs to flee his home and mysteriously finds himself somewhere far away from the Oxford that he knows. He and Lyra meet and again, so many adventures.

In the Amber Spyglass, the third book, a lot happens as well. Although I didn’t like it as much as the first two. The ending was lovely though, but some of the scenes maybe too dramatic? I can’t really tell you what happens in this book, since that would be too much of a spoiler. But what I can tell you, is that everything becomes clear and your questions will be answered.

Oh and SPOILER lots of people die.

Overall I really enjoyed reading this series! It is a world about which I haven’t read much before. Not like all of the dystopians books lately in which the main character rebels against the authority.

There are some scenes throughout the books that would have been amazing on screen, but the second and third book won’t get a book-to-movie-adaptation I’m afraid. Maybe it’s for the better? ‘Cuz we all know how good they can be *hm*.

I also did a test to see what kind of animal my daemon would be (I couldn’t find the official one)! I got the following ‘advice’:

Your daemon’s form would represent highly sensitive nature, your frank honesty, and your devotion to friends and family. He or she would stick close to you and whisper comfort and advice in your ear most of the time. When you or your loved ones needed defending, however, he or she would become as openly vocal as you, and help you in your protestations.

Suggested forms: Songbird, Dove, Swan, Domestic cat, Border Collie.

What would your daemon be? Have you read the books or have you seen the movie? What did you think?

Stacking the shelves |1

This is the first time I’m using this title. A couple of other blogs use it to announce new books, hauls, library books, just everything that includes new books and a bookshelf, be it in reality or in the virtual world. And now, me!

Last week I ordered 3 books to treat myself for a month of work. I have been trying to save money for my internship, but 3 books were worth it. The library has been my friend as well for the last couple of weeks. Usually I don’t go very often, because I buy my own books, but like I mentioned, SAVING (uhh).

So only an hour ago, the door bell rang and the postman was there with my package, yay! I ordered from again, because their service is excellent and you don’t have to pay a shipping fee when your order is over 20 euro’s.

The books that I got:

Lola and the Boy Next Door – Stephanie Perkins

Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion… she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit – the more sparkly, more wild – the better. And life is pretty close to perfect for Lola, especially with her hot rocker boyfriend. That is, until the Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighbourhood and unearth a past of hurt that Lola thought was long buried. So when talented inventor Cricket steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally face up to a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

Four – Veronica Roth

One choice breaks free of his past. One choice embraces his future. One choice exposes the dangers. One choice changes him – forever. One choice will free him.

the Revenge of Seven – Pittacus Lore

They have killed four of us. They will not rest until we are all dead. They will not stop until your planet is theirs. They think we are broken. We will not be defeated. We are all that stands in their way. We know secrets they thought hidden. We have power they never expected. The time has come for them to fall.

Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them? I’m really excited to read them!
